- PILOT (TM) V1.1
- Copyright (c) LEAD Technologies, Inc. 1991 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
-
- Thank you for trying PILOT. We think you will find it to be
- an excellent communication program.
-
- PILOT V1.1 is SHAREWARE. Shareware software gives you the
- opportunity to use the program and evaluate it before you pay for it.
- We hope that you will think enough of PILOT to use it and register
- your copy with us.
-
- By registering the specific version that best suits your needs, you
- will not only receive the latest version, technical support, and a
- manual, (depending on the version you register), but also provide the
- means for us to keep improving PILOT and continue to create shareware
- software.
-
- LEAD Technologies, Inc. is a small company just getting started in
- software\hardware design. PILOT was written originally by Moe Daher,
- one of the founders of LEAD. Working with Moe, LEAD improved upon
- his original version to produce what we feel is an excellent
- communication program. We hope that you will think so as well.
-
- At LEAD, we value your input. With that in mind, we have setup a
- small BBS to provide you with an opportunity to let us know what you
- think of PILOT. You can use the BBS to ask us questions about PILOT,
- or to leave suggestions on ways to improve the program. Use the BBS
- to create your own personal "wish list" of the features you would
- like to see in the future versions. You may also have a great idea
- of another shareware program that you would like to see developed.
-
- We are also interested in how you received this copy of PILOT. If
- you have an interesting or unusual story of how PILOT found you, call
- our BBS and leave a message telling us your story. As a contest, we
- will pick the most interesting and/or unusual story every month and
- send that person a free version of AUTO-PILOT, the $75.00 background
- version of PILOT. Be sure to include your name and address with your message.
-
- Call (704) 548-8161 to leave us a message or ask any questions.

- PILOT (TM) V1.1
- COPYRIGHT (C) LEAD Technologies, Inc. 1991 All RIGHTS RESERVED
- Operation Brief
-
- 1) INSTALLATION:
-
- A. Copy your PILOT files to a new directory.
-
- B. Change to your new directory.
-
- C. Type "PILOT" to run PILOT.
-
- If you want to run the TSR version, type "TSR" at the
- C:>new directory name. This will allow PILOT to be resident in
- memory. Please note a message will appear at the center of the
- screen instructing you to press the <Alt><Insert> keys to load the
- program. To return to your software program, press <CTRL><BREAK>
- and then <F10>.
-
- * NOTE: IF you hear a "BEEP" at the time you press the
- <Alt><Insert> keys to activate PILOT from within the TSR mode,
- it means either:
- 1) You have not properly created a TSR directory name. To
- create a TSR directory name, go to the root, type md <space>
- tsr, then type cd <space> tsr, put the disk in drive a:, and
- type copy a:*.*.
-
- 2) PILOT has determined that it is not safe to interrupt because
- a hardware or another TSR is using the same interrupts. To
- avoid this problem, operate PILOT from outside the TSR.
-
- D. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IF YOU ARE USING "WINDOWS" OR
- "DESQVIEW". Do not operate the TSR version of PILOT if you are
- using WINDOWS or DESQview. To operate PILOT simply open a new
- "window" and run the PILOT program itself.
-
- 2) Follow setup instructions as specified. If you are a first time
- user, the setup menu will appear automatically. You will be
- instructed to:
- A. Select your Modem type.
- B. Select your Baud Rate (choose the highest baud at which your
- modem will operate).
- C. Select your COM port.
-
- * NOTE: If you receive the message of "Modem not responding" check
- setup for correct:
- 1) Modem type
- 2) Com Port
- 3) Your modem's maximum speed.
- If all of the above is correct and your modem does not
- respond, try a different modem type. Most common
- alternative modem types are Hayes Ultra or Generic.
-
- If your modem still does not respond, choose the modem type
- of "Other No Hardware Hand Shaking". No hardware
- handshaking means that the modem will operate as a general
- communication package but will not use your modem's extended
- features. If you want to use your modem's extended features
- contact the modem manufacturer and request the
- initialization string and enter it manually. The modem type
- you would then select modem would be "INIT string supplied
- manually".
-
- 3) The setup program creates a file called SETUP.DAT that contains
- the setup information. CAUTION!! If this is the first time you
- are installing PILOT, we recommend you go through the SETUP menu.
- Simply press the <F9> key and answer the three simple questions.
- This will assure you that your modem and computer are correctly
- configured each time you load the program.
-
- 4) After the setup is completed, the main menu will appear.
-
- 5) Use the <F5> key to add a phone number. After entering
- the NAME and PHONE NUMBER you will use the <F1> through
- <F5> keys to enter certain parameters as follows:
-
- <F1> - To set your COM port (can set COM1 to COM9).
- <F2> - To set your Speed or Baud Rate (150 to 38.4K).
- <F3> - To set your Parity (ODD, EVEN, or NO).
- <F4> - To set your Data Bits (7 or 8).
- <F5> - To set your Stop Bits (1 or 2).
-
- 6) You will need to know what COM port your computer is
- using for the modem, usually COM1 or COM2.
-
- 7) You will also need to know the Host computer's (the computer
- you want to call) Baud Rate, parity bit, data and stop bits.
- The company or individual who is maintaining the service you are
- trying to call will supply you with this information.
-
- 8) Use the <F8> key to start the calling sequence.
-
- 9) Use the <F6> key to revise any item.
-
- 10) Use the <F7> key to delete any item.
-
- 11) While on-line, simultaneously press the <Ctrl><Break>
- keys to disconnect the call. You cannot disconnect
- PILOT while the modem is dialing a number. This process
- is indicated by the "DIALING" message that will appear in the
- lower right section of the screen.
-
- 12) If PILOT has a problem setting up the modem after you
- have pressed <F8> and typed the item number you wish to call,
- check your setup by pressing the <F9> key and go through the
- setup menu again. The setup requires you to select your modem or
- the modem closest to your brand. You are also required to enter
- the maximum speed that your modem will operate. It may be necessary
- to turn off your modem to reset the modem's internal setup.
-
- 13) To download a file:
-
- NOTE: If the host computer is set up as a 7 bit communication
- (7 data) only the Kermit file transfer protocol will function.
- This problem may be avoided if you call the host service.
-
- a) Select Download from the Host computer (the computer
- you called). Download will transfer a file from the
- Host to your PC (Remote computer).
-
- b) Select Protocol (Xmodem, Ymodem, etc.) from the Host
- computer. See protocol definition section below to
- determine which protocol is best for your needs.
- c) Select Host computer's file name you wish to download.
-
- d) Press <F1> for Transfer.
-
- e) Press <F2> to Download.
-
- f) Select the same protocol you selected for the Host
- computer.
-
- g) Select the Remote (your PC) computer's drive,
- directory and file name you wish to save the
- file to. PILOT defaults to the drive and directory
- you are in if you just designate a
- file name.
-
- h) Press return and the transfer will start.
-
-
- 14) While on-line you have two additional options:
-
- <F2> - To dump all incoming information to your printer.
-
- <F3> - To dump all incoming information to a file which will be
- saved on your disk.
-
- <F4> - To exit to DOS. You can exit to DOS and run another
- program or use DOS commands. To exit DOS and go back to
- PILOT type "EXIT" at the DOS prompt and PRESS <ENTER>.
-
- If you exit to DOS while on-line, you will not lose your
- connection nor will you lose any incoming data. If you
- press <F4> and nothing happens, check to see if you have
- any other TSR or memory manager active. It is possible
- that PILOT has detected an unsafe interrupt in memory,
- and decided that it is not safe to interrupt and go into
- DOS.
-
- It is possible to exit to DOS while running PILOT within
- PILOT's TSR mode, without losing your connection or any
- incoming data. You can execute any DOS command or run
- another program. However, it is possible that if you get
- three or four levels down from the mother program
- (PILOT's TSR) your function and arrow keys may be
- disabled.
-
- It is recommended that if you want to operate PILOT V1.1
- from within PILOT's TSR, and exit to DOS, use programs
- that do not rely on function keys and arrows keys to
- operate. Use AUTO-PILOT to have the use of all keys
- while operating in the background.
-
- 15) To upload a file:
-
- a) Select Upload from the Host computer. Upload will
- transfer a file from your PC (Remote computer) to the
- Host computer.
-
- b) Select Protocol (Xmodem, Ymodem, etc.) from the host
- computer. See protocol definition section below to
- determine which protocol is best for your purposes.
-
-
- c) Select the Host computer's file name you wish to save
- the file as. You may or may not be able to designate
- the specific drive and directory to save to. This
- will depend on the Host computer that you have
- called.
-
- d) Press <F1> for Transfer.
-
- e) Press <F1> to Upload.
-
- f) Select the same protocol you selected
- for the remote computer.
-
- g) Select the Remote (your PC) computer's drive,
- directory and file name you wish to transfer. PILOT
- defaults to the drive and directory you are in if you
- just designate a file name.
-
- h) Press return and the transfer will start.

- LEAD's BBS Brief Description.
-
- LEAD Technologies, Inc. BBS feature allows you to have your PC
- receive a call.
-
- Use the <F4> key to start the BBS feature of PILOT. The BBS
- program will allow you to receive calls from any other PC or
- main frame.
-
- You can create an ASCII file called MSG.TXT. The BBS will
- display the contents of the file to the in coming calls. LEAD's
- message allows you to type 23 lines to text and then prompt the
- caller to press the <ENTER> key to display 23 more lines.
- MSG.TXT gives you the ability to leave messages for any caller
- coming into your system. After you type your message, save it as
- an ASCII file with the name MSG.TXT. Place the MSG.TXT file in
- the current directory that callers will be calling in own. If you
- want to setup up different directories for different callers to
- use and leave different messages, place the specific MSG.TXT file
- in the appropriate directory.
-
- This version of LEAD's BBS will setup the modem at the maximum
- speed and the COM port that you have selected in PILOT's setup.
- To change the BBS' setup, you must go change PILOT's setup.
- Version 2.0 and AUTO-PILOT provide you with a separate menu to
- set the BBS' speed, COM port, data, parity and stop.
-
- One excellent application for LEAD's BBS is to register two (2)
- versions of PILOT and install one at the office and one at home.
- If you are at the office, leave your home PC on the BBS
- (wait for a call), and when you go home, leave your office PC on.
- PILOT then allows you to work at the home or office and transfer
- files to the other computer. No more transferring files by floppy disk.
-
- If you call into LEAD's BBS, you will get the following menu:
-
- Press <D> to Download a file from the computer you called.
- Press <U> to Upload a file to the computer you called.
- Press <S> to Show files in the current directory of the computer
- you called.
- Press <L> to List sub-directories of the computer you called.
- Press <C> to Change directory of the computer you called. *
- Press <M> to Make a directory. *
- Press <V> to View a text file from the computer you called.
- Press <T> to Talk with the computer you called.
- Press <Q> to Log off and disconnect.
-
- * When you select <C> Change a directory, or <M> Make a
- directory, you will need to start at the root. For example,
- if you were in a directory called C:\Lotus and you wanted to
- change to a sub-directory in Lotus called Files, you would
- type C:\Lotus\Files.
-
-
-
-
-
- The LEAD BBS phone number is (704) 548-8161. We would like to invite
- you to use the BBS to leave comments that you have on the PILOT
- communication program. Once you have registered for PILOT V2.0 or
- higher, you will also be given access to additional shareware and
- LEAD technical support.
-
-
- * * * BBS * * *
-
- A true BBS is a program where multi-users can call and upload or
- download information. On-line questions can also be asked. The
- service that you downloaded PILOT from was probably a BBS. This
- version of PILOT contains a semi-BBS. The intent is to allow the
- user to have his PC receive a phone call.
-
- If you are interested in having the ability to start your own BBS,
- and have multiple users access your service, register PILOT V2.0
- or higher and then contact LEAD Technologies, Inc. for information
- regarding the purchasing of a complete version of PILOT BBS.
